In a surprising turn of events that signals a potential shift in Ondo State’s political landscape, Ambassador Samuel Ebiesuwa, a prominent leader of the Voice of Ilaje/Ese-Odo Progressive, has publicly declared his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA).
The announcement, made during a press conference at Ebiesuwa’s Akure residence on Friday, has sent ripples through the state’s political circles, potentially reshaping the dynamics of the upcoming 2024 governorship election.
Ebiesuwa, known for his significant influence in the Ilaje and Ese-Odo areas, cited disillusionment with the APC’s performance as his primary reason for switching allegiances. He praised Akingboye as “an exceptional leader” with the capacity to transform Ondo State’s fortunes.
“Our long nightmare is over,” Ebiesuwa stated, urging voters to reject the APC in the forthcoming election. He highlighted Akingboye’s plans for improved healthcare, empowerment of local communities, and economic revitalization as key factors in his decision to support the SDP candidate.
This defection could potentially upset the political balance in Ondo State, where the APC has held sway since 2016. It also underscores the growing appeal of the SDP and its candidate, Akingboye, who himself was formerly a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the SDP.
As news of Ebiesuwa’s defection spreads, political analysts are closely watching for any domino effect this might have on other APC members and supporters in the state. With the 2024 governorship election on the horizon, this development would mark the beginning of a significant realignment in Ondo’s political landscape.
The APC has yet to respond to this high-profile defection, while the SDP camp has welcomed Ebiesuwa’s support as a validation of their candidate’s vision for the state. As the campaign season heats up, all eyes will be on Ondo State to see how this political shake-up influences the race for the governorship.”
